Musicians in the 21st century must be familiar with a wide variety of rhetorical skills, whether they are performers, scholars, composers, teachers, or ambassadors to the broader community. Good communicators cultivate a connection with their audiences, communicate their own passion, and make sense of the structure and beauty of music. But it can be difficult to translate sound into words. In this course, students will develop this craft, with special attention to practicing public speaking skills and exploring contemporary media from a humanistic perspective. How do we experience sound and music as human beings in the digital age? Are audiences hearing in the ways we think they are? How are ways of hearing influenced by culture or community? Through sustained inquiry into questions about how we listen in the 21st century, students will practice and deepen their understanding of the tools we use to communicate creatively. |
