Description: Perhaps never before, not even in the age of Shakespeare, had the British Isles witnessed such a flowering of literary talent in a short span of time: six major poets, not to mention a host of other talented writers, in two generations.  The romantic period coincided with profound political, social, and intellectual upheavals.  Living and working in the shadow of two major revolutions, in America and France, romantic writers, painters, and composers broke from tradition in a multitude of ways.  In this course we will study the major poetry and prose of British romanticism in the context of the movements—literary, cultural, political, social, scientific—that helped influence and were in turn influenced by the major authors of the day. May be repeated for credit.
