Description: |
This course addresses anthropological questions and issues raised by the making, marketing, use and disposal of mobile phones in the global South or “developing world.” We will consider how people use mobile phones (both basic handsets and smartphones) for everything from Facebook to financial inclusion, and we will also consider the corporate actors that produce, distribute and profit from mobile phones. Readings include ethnographic studies of mobile phones in Africa, South Asia, East Asia, Oceania and the Caribbean. Students will propose, develop and present research projects that focus on some particular aspect of the spread of mobile phones throughout the developing world. Prerequisite: ANT 101 helpful. Open to first year students only with permission of instructor. |
