Description: This course introduces the greatest must-read Chinese work, an eighteenth-century novel, Dream of the Red Chamber (Hongloumeng). We will understand this novel in its intensive reading text and its media adaptations. In addition, we explore the novel’s unique reflection on traditional Chinese values, reality, and fiction. Via the lenses of the novel, we also de-construct Chinese historical narrative, literacy genres, food culture, costumes, composition styles, and gender roles in traditional China. No background in Chinese literature, culture, or language assumed. You have a choice in reading in English (for non-Chinese natives) or reading in Chinese (for Chinese natives).
