Description: In this course we will survey the evolution of the epic genre in the ancient world and its modern reception. We will examine the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, the Greek Homeric poems (Iliad and Odyssey), the Hellenistic Argonautica, the Roman Aeneid, and Walcott’s Omeros. We will examine issues of theme, structure, character development, composition, and changes in the genre over time and culture. All readings will be in English or English translation.
