Description: This is creative writing course that will improve students’ writing skills for the screen. The course will consist of two separate objectives. The personal objective of the course is genre specialization. The students will choose a genre that they want to write in, and they will learn specifics of genres with weekly assignments to guide them throughout the course. For their personal objective, they will develop a feature film idea on a chosen genre, produce a treatment of the story, outlining the major scenes of the story. As a final project, they will write the First Act (~30 pages). The general objective of the course will follow the basics of screenwriting. We will read chapters from Lagos Egri’s The Art of Dramatic Writing (1946), Robert McKee’s Story (1998) andDialogue (2016), and Paul Gulino’s Screenwriting: The Sequence Approach (2004), among others. We will analyze screenplays that highlights these structures and watch films that are considered highly successful by WGA.

Course held Fully Online (both synchronous and asynchronous).
