Description: An introductory survey of the history of South Asia from the Mughal period to the present, with a special emphasis on the British colonial era and the making of the Indian and Pakistani nations. Course readings will emphasize South Asia's remarkable religious, cultural, and environmental diversity and the challenges and promises that such diversity presents to national identity in these two post-colonial nations. Course format will be an informal mix of lectures, discussions, student presentations, and films.
