The phenomena we identify as “Hindu” is so varied in its complex forms and expressions that we will use certain historical markers to create more focused study. This course centers on the origins and evolution of Hinduism before the introduction of Islam (c. 1100CE). We will, however, touch on a few important movements that carry into the modern period. We will read from primary sources in translation and practices that connect the storytelling traditions (myths, oral lore) to ritual, the pantheon of gods, goddesses, demons, and divines to the practices of meditation, asceticism, yoga, and householder worship both in private and public. Secondary scholarship will help us create historical context and interpret ideas, values, beliefs, and practices. |
