Description: This course considers techniques that photographers use to highlight the artifice of images. From altered landscapes to photographic tableaux to three-dimensional forms, students will examine how the constructed image plays a role in the medium of photography. The main focus of each project will be finding ways to communicate ideas through art, within the parameters and challenges of each assignment. Along the way, students will learn techniques in areas such as studio lighting, staging, and mixed-media installation. In conjunction with their studio projects, students will be exposed to current and historical trends in photography and related media through readings, research, and group discussions. Basic experience with digital photography is required. Prerequisite: SA141, SA151, or any relevant prior experience with photography. Permission of the instructor is required to enroll. ($50 studio fee)

From digital book, to photo album, to one-of-a-kind curio box of prints, we will examine the multiple roles that contemporary photography and related media plays within our unique cultural moment. The class projects will focus on book structures and material, bookbinding, image sequencing and editing, printing, and design. Interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches will be encouraged. This course will culminate with an exhibition of works and a book exchange. Basic experience with digital photography is required. Prerequisite: SA141, SA151 or any relevant prior experience with photography. Permission of instructor is required to enroll.($50 studio fee)
